Tim Britain's class system – and salaries – inherited from fathers (Guardian 12th Feb 2010)

"Study finds background determines success and social mobility in UK, with children of parents with degrees paid 62% more

A father's income determines his son's to a greater extent in Britain than in any other wealthy nation, with half of a high earner's "economic advantage" being transmitted to their children, a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-op

Tim Fathers struggling to balance work and family - EHRC report out today. What do you think??

Many British fathers are working long hours, struggling to balance work and family and fear that requesting flexible working will damage their careers, a new report from the Equality and Human Rights Commission has found. The report, launched today (20 Oct) to coincide with Parents’ Week, finds that British men want to take a more active role in caring for their children. But four in 10 fathers say they spend too little time with their children. Forty-five per cent of men fail to take two week… Continue

Tim Express - CASH-STRAPPED families are prioritising home internet access over food and paying the bills.

According to the Express recently: "Shocking new research shows that 11million British homeowners are putting broadband over bread. A staggering 67 per cent of the 500 families questioned said they would rather cut back on school uniforms, family holidays and the weekly food shop than the internet. The O2 Digital Families report also revealed the average UK household now has 2.4 televisions rather than children. And 40 per cent of parents claim technology purchases and bills account for 10 p… Continue

Andrew Cut in maternity leave to give fathers more time off - The Times, yesterday

Rosemary Bennett, Social Affairs Correspondent of The Times, writes 30th March 2009 "Statutory maternity leave should be cut to six months and new paid leave given to fathers, a report from the equalities watchdog says. The focus on maternity leave has entrenched the notion that only mothers look after children and damages women’s careers by making them less attractive employees, the group warns. New mothers currently get nine months of paid leave, six weeks at 90 per cent of their salary and… Continue

Tim From Quantity Comes Quality

Last Monday was a quiet day in our office. Snow had swept in through the South East of England and very few people made it in to work. From time to time, one or to individuals - lost souls, diverted from their path to the coffee machine - would come wandering in. Every time (to a man and woman) the following scenario would then be acted out: Stranded passer by: "Quiet in here today - where is everyone?" Small group of workers (chorus): "Not here. Anyway, it's quality, not quantity." Oh, how w… Continue

Tim Invest now

Let’s face it, the childhood chant of, 'I'm bored!' soon dampens even the greatest resolve. School holidays are a mixture of excitement and trepidation, for parents and children alike. But if you think about it, in the grand scheme of things, there aren't going to be many chances to enjoy holidays with your kids before they are grown up. There isn't an endless supply of time to build those important memories before they have left home and have children of their own. And there aren't going to be… Continue

Ian Mayhew Best Birthday Party in ages

Took my lad Sam and 5 of his mates for a Night Bike Ride for his 9th Birthday Party. Worked brilliantly. Kids came tooled up with lights etc, we gave out some hi-viz kit that a dad had "borrowed" from his company. I also arranged for a couple of friends to jump out of the bushes towards the end of our ride - which freaked the living daylights out of them. Cheap party (cost me a small portion of chips per kid) with maximum memories! Oh yes Continue

Alex McDonnell Feather Down Farms

I found this place and I think for anyone who's feeling adventurous and fancies a bit of camping but the idea of damp, collapsing tents and midnight trips to the toilet block a little bit off-putting should have a go at this: http://www.featherdownfarms.co.uk/ Should also be considered an added bonus that you won't have to cope with a bunch of pissed up students being sick on your tent in the middle of the night. Also looks like great fun for the kids, lots of animals to see and little project… Continue

Tim Slightly obscure, but cool things to do with your kids (pinched from The Guardian this weekend) ... build a xylophone

Flicking through the paper this weekend, I came across this under the heading 'If I had the time...'. Slightly obscure but kind of cool too: Build a xylophone by Melissa Viguier "We began with a child's size mini xylophone. In order to extend this to make a giant xylophone, measuring 1.5m we just scaled up the design. Beginning with the frame, which is roughly A-shaped, we screwed together four pieces of wood - it can be any length; it just needs to be strong and A-shaped. Then,… Continue

Tim Dad - can we make a den?

Every child under 10 knows, the real purpose of a couch is to be turned into a make-believe bus, aircraft, ship, submarine or spacecraft. You can add extra cushions for comfort, and extra credibility by spreading blankets or some spare old curtains on the floor to represent the sea, etc, if you want. Take things a step further by working with them to build a few extras - a periscope (some stiff cardboard, glue and a couple of small mirrors) or an instrument panel, computer made out of old cardbo… Continue

Ian Mayhew Hancock without the cock-ups!

I loved “Hancock”. Dismissed by many as chewing gum for the eyes, for me it confirmed some things. Will Smith plays an inebriated chaotic super-hero vigilante who dismisses life as pointless whilst embarking on life-saving acts! Change is engineered by Ray, a consultant who… Continue

Andrew For the travelling dad

Record on MP3 or other similar recording device a number of 3-4 minute sound bites - tell the kids where you are going on what particular day, read stories, poetry, silly songs - anything that can provide amusement for a few minutes a day for your kids when you are away. If desired it can become the ‘treat’ once kids are fed, watered, washed & dressed etc ready for school - this way, even though physically absent, you are still able to contribute to the rhythm of family life. Why not post so… Continue
